American Gothic

there are primordial aggressive egos
clashing without ceremony under you
in fluorescent lights
overdoses seen through metal dream catchers

ancient houses strewn
with addicts on the lawn
some with stitches for eyes

how late will you linger here, watching them?

cold and relaxed in wire recliners,
sipping mercury from a black champagne glass
your dreams are held by shadowy figures
next to an empty pool.
